Halloween Cookies

Today I spent the day making cookies. This is my first batch. The kids help make the batter and they decorated their own ones too. They are so much fun, and sort of easier to make than a cake. But I like to pay attention to the details, so it took me quite a bit to finished them. By the end I was doing about 5 minutes a cookie.... is that slow? the decorations are all on fondant. The black cats are chocolate fondant.

If the shoe fits! 40th Birthday Cake

OK, this was a private joke!! certain person I know had a pair of shoes exactly like these ones.. really, no joking!!! They were called sponge fingers. So what more appropriate than celebrating his birthday with a "sponge" shoe!!! Off course it is sponge cake covered with buttercream details. No cheese in this one.....

Airplanes anyone? A not so plain plane cake

Calling all pilots!!!
This is a specially designed plane for Ethan Airways - celebrating its 3rd year in planet earth! Yummy vanilla pound cake with fondant. The plane was carved out of the cake, no cheating with molds here.

What am I working on now?

A fairy cake!

I am quite excited about this one. A dancing fairy in a forest of flowers and butterflies!! So far I have just done the fairy, well this one is my second shot at it, the first one literally slide off my hand when it was almost done and broke in thousand pieces!!! I wanted to cry as I spend so much time on it. But it is OK, teh second one is prettier I think. I can wait to finish the whole cake.

A Baby Block Party - 1st year birthday cake

I always wanted to do one of this!!! a baby block. So I got my chance to celebrate birthday #1 of baby Matt - hence the block letters. The cake is layered (4 layers) of chocolate and vanilla pound cake. The white is buttercream and the accents are fondant. The baby and bear are half gum paste and half fondant. The baby actually looks like Matt - really.

Hello Kitty themed birthday party - No cake, make me cupcakes mami!!

I always loved Hello Kitty as a little girl, but I never thought I would find myself making 40 individually unique Hello Kitty cupcakes in less than 2 hours!!! There were so adorable, it was hard to see them being devoured by 3 year olds.. Well at least they enjoyed them.

I made the Hello Kitty and friends heads in advanced with color flow. I did some boys and some girls so everybody will be happy. The cupcakes are covered with buttercream and some royal icing and color flow flowers. Some cupcakes have a weaving design and others just flower arrangements.

The pinata was very simple - just a rainbow with some Hello Kitty cutouts at the top.

International Cake Exploration Society - 09 conference

The 09 ICES conferene just finished in Illinois. It was fantastic!! I have never seen so many expectacular cakes in one place. Congratulations to the Venezuelan team - you had by far the best cakes of all!! Followed by Dominican Republic and Argentina. I am attaching here some of my favorites - I will truly try to make my own adaptations of some of these beautiful designs... I am already thinking of a beautiful fairy cake for my little girl.

The Making of the Titanic - Themed Party - Cake and Piñata

A party of Titanic proportions

It does not matter how old you are, 5 or 80 years old, if you get Titanic fever you must follow it! The party ship departed but this time it did not sink. I started by downloading the plans, the real plans for the boat and figured out how to translate them into a cake and a piñata to the best of my abilities.

I started the piñata from scratch- that means cardboard, staples, glue, a lot of imagination and late nights. It took about 2 weeks to complete as I could only work about 1 to 2 hours a day. I also needed time for the papier mache to dry in between layers. It was very rewarding to see the final piece, complete with flags and all.

The cake took about 8 hours - it is a butter sponge, covered in buttercream. It has at least 5 layers of sheet cake to get the right height. The windows are chocolate chips. You can eat everything in that cake except the flag poles!! I debated whether to put the iceberg in, but I guess you could not have a Titanic without an iceberg.
