Why do I want my kids to learn Spanish?

Because of love and family!

I know there are many rational reasons why they should speak my native language, from giving them an opportunity of getting better jobs in the future to keeping our Venezuelan traditions alive, but for me the most important of all is love.

I want them to speak Spanish because I love them and I love my mother and my family and I know the only way they can truly communicate is by speaking the same language. I want them to one day be able to sit down with their granny and have a long conversation together. I want them to get to know each other well. I want my kids to be able to hear all our family's stories and to enjoy their childhood surrounded by family as I did. Learning Spanish will open a door for them, the front door of my past, the front door of love!

So every time I hear them say a new word, I am happy. I am happy because they are one step closer. Sometimes I feel that I am not doing enough, that I should do more. These are the times I need to be reminded that every little thing counts, that even when they may not speak too many words now, the language is somewhere in their heads, ready to flourish one day.
